Inheriting and Promoting: The New-era Spirit at the Centennial of the May 4th Movement

五四运动是一场救亡图存的爱国运动和思想解放的启蒙运动,孕育了爱国、进步、民主、科学的"五四精神"。"五四精神"的核心,是伟大的爱国主义。百年来,五四精神与时俱进,常讲常新。随着中国特色社会主义进入新时代,"五四精神"依然具有极其深刻的价值,不仅爱国、进步、民主、科学的内涵发生了变化,而且其具体的表现方式也发生了变化:由救亡图存的爱国精神转变为以爱国主义为核心的民族精神;由革故鼎新的进步精神转变为以改革创新为核心的时代精神;由追求资产阶级民主转变为成功开辟和坚持中国特色社会主义政治发展道路,推动社会主义民主政治建设和发展;从科教救国到科教兴国,再到由科学精神助力推动建设科学理性与价值理性相统一的世界科技强国。传承和弘扬"五四精神"对于夺取新时代中国特色社会主义伟大胜利、实现中华民族伟大复兴具有十分重要的理论意义和实践价值。

The May 4 th Movement is a patriotic movement to save the Chinese nation from demise and also an enlightening movement to emancipate people’s mind. It nurtured the "May 4 th Spirit" of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, with great patriotism being its focus. Over the past century, the "May 4 th Spirit" has kept up with the times and constantly taken on a new countenance. As socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era, it still has profound value. Not only has the connotation of patriotism, progress, democracy and science changed, but also its concrete manifestation has changed: from the patriotism of saving China to the national spirit centered on patriotism;from the spirit of progress to the spirit of reform and innovation;from pursuing bourgeois democracy to successfully opening up and adhering to the road of socialist political development with Chinese characteristics, and to promoting the development of socialist democratic politics;and from saving the country through science and education to rejuvenating the country through science and education, and to building China into a world scientific and technological power with the unity of scientific rationality and value rationality due to the help of scientific spirit. It is of great theoretical and practical significance to inherit and carry forward the May 4 th Spirit for the great victory of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
