Although Saul Bellow has invited considerable critical attention, the journey narrative in his novels is often ignored. Focusing on The Adventures of Augie March, this article studies the protagonist’s picaresque travel, including the space he traverses and the vehicles he takes, to reveal the similarities and differences between Jewish diasporic culture and American travel culture. The article argues that this novel inherits Jewish diasporic travel culture and reveals how the Jewish immigrants understand, internalize and return to their traditional culture despite the prevalence of money worship and hedonism within American mainstream culture.
