Double Sides between the “Wall”——Cultural Space Interpretation of Gem of the Ocean

《海洋之珍》以伊斯特姨妈之家及骨头之城为代表的墙内空间与白人主导的墙外世界形成对照,表明非裔美国人通过找寻自我舒适的文化场所、积极回归祖先文化以及在文化空间内自我赋权的方式完成了非洲传统文化的追溯、传承之旅。奥古斯特·威尔逊意在通过文化空间的建构告诉非裔美国同胞:要想抵御墙外具有官方话语权的白人世界,最好的方式就是在墙内构筑起非洲传统祖先文化滋养的理想家园。

Represented by Aunt Easter's house and the Bone City,the inside cultural spaces in Gem of the Ocean contrasts with the white-dominated outside world.It shows that African-Americans have completed the retrospect and inheritance of traditional African culture by seeking self-comfortable cultural space,actively returning to ancestral culture and self-empowerment in cultural space.Through the construction of cultural spaces,August Wilson intends to tell African Americans that the best way to resist the white-dominated world is to build an ideal cultural space which is nurtured by the traditional African culture.
