Foreignization and Domestication in Multimodal Discourse Translation

异化与归化是在语言单模态背景下提出和使用的译学术语,将其拓展至多模态话语符合译学未来的发展趋势。在对多模态话语中异化与归化的研究范畴和定义等相关问题进行探讨的基础上,提出"基本操作单位"概念以及异化归化的三种分析模式,即分析某一基本操作单位的策略、分析某一类基本操作单位的策略和分析话语总体策略,并以具体个案为例来进一步阐释说明,为多模态话语的翻译策略分析提供了示范,同时也明确了分析对象和确定基本操作单位的重要性。

Foreignization and domestication are two academic terms proposed and used in the context of monomodal discourse, and the extension of their uses in the multimodal discourse conforms to the future development trend of translation studies. Based on the discussions of foreignization’s and domestication’s definitions in the multimodal discourse and relevant questions, the paper proposes the concept of “basic operation unit” and three analyzing models, namely the analysis of one basic manipulating unit, the analysis of one kind of basic manipulating unit and the analysis of the whole discourse, for foreignization and domestication, provides further elaborations with case analyses which exemplify the analysis of the translation strategy of multi-modal discourse, and also indicates the importance of making clear the subject and the basic manipulating unit in translation strategy analysis.
