Danma, or Danyu, has been documented as a part of Dengke County Xikang Province in the Republic of China, now a part of Garze Prefecture, Sichuan Province. In ancient times, its geographical scope was extremely extensive, involving some regions of Tibet, Sichuan and Qinghai today. Based on some ancient Tibetan documents related to King Gesar and Dunhuang, this article will discuss the origin of the name of Danyu, the trend of Tang-Tubo Ancient Road in Danyu, the communication of Buddhism in Danyu, and its influence on the economy and culture in Khams.
