The successful application of World Heritage for the Grand Canal has raised the protection, development and utilization of the Canal to a new height. In this process, a common problem faced by the cities along the canal is how to make the protection and development of the canal consistent with the pace of urban development. As the province with the largest number of canals flowing through its cities, Jiangsu should first consider the relationship between Canal Heritage and urban development. Considering the general trend of coordinated regional development, it is particularly important to realize the coordinated development of canal cities. This research, taking eight districts and cities along the Canal in Jiangsu as the research object, compares the characteristics of the coordinated development of the canal cities horizontally and vertically against the historical background of the formation of the characteristics of these cities, and applies the SWOT model to the analysis of the elements of this development. Finally, it proposes some practical ways for the government, enterprises and non-governmental organizations to contribute to the coordinated development of those canal cities in Jiangsu.
