"The Kuan-ing Ospreys"holds an incomparable status in Odes(Shijing),yet the interpretation of this poem is inconclusive. We should take full advantage of Five Modes of Conduct(Wu Xing)manuscript from Mawangdui and Confucius’Discussion of the Odes(Kongzi shilun),as well as the archaeological study of ancient tombs from the Zhou Dynasty and even the results of field investigation,as well as using the valuable achievements made by Chinese and Western scholars,to re-examine this special poem. The ideas of regarding it as marital poem, royal poem, sacrificial poem or love poem are all closely related to the interpretation of"with bell and drum I please her."Considering the existing evidences,"The Kuan-ing Ospreys"indeed tells the love between men and women, but also it suggests that ritual propriety is far more important than erotic allure.
