Objective To investigate the differences in the survival rate and quality of life between patients taking hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Methods 90 patients with end-stage renal disease treated at our hospital from March, 2011 to August, 2013 were selected, and were divided into a hemodialysis group (n=42) and a peritoneal dialysis group (n=48) according to the dialysis methods. The survival rates and quality of life were observed in both groups. Results The 5-year survival rate was 30.95% in the hemodialysis group, and was 35.42% in the peritoneal dialysis group (P > 0.05). The scores of mental health, emotional function, and physical pain were significantly higher in the peritoneal dialysis group than in the hemodialysis group, with statistical differences (all P < 0.05);but, there were no statistical differences in the scores of physiology, physiological function, social function, vitality, and health change between the two groups (all P > 0.05). Conclusion Compared with hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis has less effect on the patients’ psychological and mental aspects, but the two dialysis methods have no significant difference in the influence on the survival rate.
