《柳文指要》是著名学者章士钊晩年撰写的一部解析柳宗元作品的学术专著。在《柳文指要》中,章士钊着重分析了柳文的艺术手法和艺术特色,认为柳文的最大特色是行文讲究“洁”。“洁”包括用字妥帖,意尽言止,文从字顺,谋篇布局精当等内容"章士钊认为,为文要做到“洁”,必先做到“诚”,不“诚”无“洁”,“诚”是“洁”的前提和基础。

Liu Wen Zhi Yao was Zhang Shizhao s work which studies Liu Zongyuan's work. In Liu Wen Zhi Yao, Zhang Shizhao emphatically analyzed its artistic techniques and features. The most outstanding artistic feature suggested by Zhang Shizhao is pithiness which includes proper words and ending of a sentence, the naturalness and Huency as well as the rational anangement of the overall structure. Zhang Shizhao considers that honesty is the premise of pithiness in a article. Namely, There is no pithiness without honesty and pithiness is based on honesty.
