This paper collects and trims the data of the shuzhu zhu(lit."bundled bamboo columns";reeded columns)and waleng zhu(lit."corrugated columns";fluted columns)of the Eastern Han Dynasty, emphasizes the native origin of the former and the exotic origin of the latter, and points out that the motif of combined shuzhu and waleng patterns was assigned the connotation related to the proliferation of offspring. The emergence and development of waleng(fluting),as an imported architectural decor for China, need to be understood with the references to the communications between China and the West on the ideas and techniques of architecture and sculpture. The joint application of the shuzhu and waleng patterns in the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the several centuries since then reflected the absorption and adaptation of the local cultures to the exotic cultural elements, and the final submission of the exotic cultural elements to the native views on life and death and genealogical continuity.
