Association Creation of Huixian Association and Its Artistic Characteristics

左秉隆作为晚清驻新加坡第一任领事,其业绩有目共睹、为人称道。他和他后面的继任者陆续南来,通过开办文会和进行诗歌创作,极大促进当地整体文学风气和教化氛围的兴起,进而形成一个由南来文人与本地士绅组成的“士阶层”。这个士阶层持续地以熟悉的文学技艺和形式——旧体诗文来写作,创作出了马华文学古典时期最早的形态。左领事在任内开办的文会主要有会贤社、会吟社。通过搜集、整理当时当地的多家华文报纸以及一些零散的相关研究成果,藉由对这些史料的深入分析,从内容和艺术特色这两方面,探讨这两大文会之一——贤社的对联创作,揭示其对马华旧文学的产生起推广作用的原因和表现。

As the first consul in Singapore in the late Qing Dynasty, Zuo Binglong's achievements are obvious to all and praised. He and his successors came to the south one after another. By organizing literary meetings and poetry creation, he greatly promoted the rise of the local overall literary and cultural atmosphere, and thus formed a "gentry class" consisting of southern writers and local gentry. This scholar class continued to write with the familiar literary skills and forms, the old-style poetry and prose, and created the earliest form in the classical period of Malaysian Chinese literature. During his term of office, the Left Consufs cultural conferences mainly consisted of Huixian Association and Huiyin Association. By collecting and sorting out a number of local Chinese newspapers and some scattered related research results, through in-depth analysis of these historical materials, this paper explores the couplet creation of Huixian Association, one of the two major literary societies, from two aspects of content and artistic characteristics, and reveals the reasons and manifestations of its role in promoting the emergence of Malaysian Chinese old literature.
