Summary and Reflection of Hawaii University’s Chinese Theatre Project in 2018

夏威夷大学的中国戏曲排演已有五十多年历史。2018年度中国戏曲公演剧目英语京剧《柜中缘》《三岔口》及英语川剧《皮金滚灯》得到夏威夷观众的高度认可,为中国戏曲在海外的传播起到了积极作用。此次公演是夏威夷大学中国戏曲研究、训练和公演一体化模式的成果展示。以演出为目的的高质量戏曲英译是夏威夷大学中国戏曲成功上演的重要因素。但夏威夷大学中国戏曲项目前景不容乐观,招生人数的减少及经费筹集的困难等问题需要解决。

It has been more than fifty years since the project of rehearsing and performing Chinese traditional theatre in Hawaii University was started. In 2018, two English Beijing opera plays Treasure in the Chest, Where Three Roads Meet and one English Sichuan Opera Pijin Rolls the Lamp were performed by students from Hawaii University and well accepted by the local audience, which played a positive effect on publicizing Chinese traditional theatre overseas. The public performance is a successful demonstration of the study, rehearsal and performance of Chinese theatre in Hawaii University. The play translation for the purpose of performance is the key to the success. However, the future development of the Chinese Theatre Project in Hawaii University is unpredictable as it is facing the problems of decline of the number of theatre students and lack of fund.
