This paper, based on the rhyming and Xiesheng谐声cases of Gebu歌部,Zhibu脂部and Weibu微部characters, proposes that there have been two liquid endings*-r and*-l in Old Chinese of the Shijing诗经era, which then merge into one.The Gebu characters, which evolve into Second and Third Grades rhymes in Middle Chinese, have seen vowel heightening in the Warring States period, and can rhyme with Weibu,Zhibu and Zhibu支部characters, which then evolve to*-el in the West Han period, and later on to*-ej in the East Han period.
