In June 2012,Xuzhou Museum excavated four tombs of the Han Dynasty on the north slope of the Baiyun Hill to the northeast of Xuzhou City proper. All of these tombs were vertical stone shaft pit or stone cave tombs, from which 49 pieces(sets)of artifacts were unearthed;among them, the tomb M12 yielded a complete assemblage of pottery ritual vessels and jade pillow,huang-semicircular pendant, ring and chape for decorating sword scabbard, which are all symbols of the high rank of the tomb occupant.Referring to the tomb structures and unearthed artifacts, the dates of these four tombs are estimated to be the early Western Han Dynasty. The excavations of these tombs have significant meanings for the studies on the burial system and funeral customs in the Xuzhou area during the early Western Han Dynasty and provide important materials for the researches on the development and evolution of the joint tombs of couples in the Western Han Dynasty.
