The Origin of New Literature Movement: A Historical Explanation

近代中国新文学运动的发生,主要是基于工业化、城市化进程,但从其学术资源角度看,也必须注意到自古以来文言分离、分立的事实。新文学实际上是将自古以来的“言”做了系统清理,将原本不登大雅之堂之口语书面化、规范化、学术化,从而文言一致,说写合一。这一方面让中国文明中典雅的一部分有所流逝,另一方面扩大了中国文明的基础,让文学从精英阶层中抽离出来,不再是知识精英的身份象征。

The occurrence of new literature movement in modern China is mainly based on the industrialization and urbanization.However,from the standpoint of its academic resources,the fact,that Chinese speech has always been in the separation or division in writing and speaking since ancient times,should be taken into consideration.Actually,the new literature cleans up systematically those originally unrefined"spoken speech"coming from ancient times,and makes them in a written,standardized,and academic form,so as to achieve the consistency and unity of speaking and writing.On the one hand,it allowed the passing of the elegant part of Chinese civilization,but on the other hand,it expanded the foundation of Chinese civilization and removed literature from the elite,and made it no longer a status symbol of the intellectual elite.
