Harvey Birch, the hero in the war novel,<The Spy>by James Cooper,is a peddler,a small figure in public, however,he is secretly a spy under the direct leadership of Gorge Washington, the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.He shoulders the sacred mission, and suffers from humiliation and misunderstanding for his vocation. He is a loyal, brave, selfless and virtuous man.To him, honor is worth being defended with life. From the perspective of Americanism,Harvey, created by Cooper,is a banner of patriotism and a monument of the national hero. This image had a very positive impact on the formation of the early national consciousness of the US and the shaping of the American National character.
