Kitchen is an important part of home space, which embodies rights, class and gender struggles. Oates′s Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been describes an American young woman Connie′s life experience in 1960s. Connie constructs self-identity, expresses feelings and subverts the traditional male-dominated social structure in the space of kitchen. However, the kitchen also represents Connie′s fragile psychological space, which cannot protect Connie from violation. And lack of family function and cold family relationships also cause Connie′s tragedy.
