Ovate family proteins(OFPs) is a class of transcription suppressor, which exist only in the plant with a conserved OVATE domain. Ovate was first cloned in tomato and mapped to chromosome 2. The single GTA496-to-TTA493 nucleotide polymorphism mutation created an early stop codon in the ovate genotype, leading to the change of round-shaped to pear-shaped fruit. Then, the functions of OFPs were successively investigated in Arabidopsis, rice, pepper and banana. It was found that OFPs can regulate plant growth and development by directly regulating the expressions of target genes or interacting with other transcription factors. This article reviewed the functions and regulatory mechanisms of OFPs on fruit shape, fruit ripening and quality formation, ovule development, vascular development and secondary cell wall formation in recent years, which hoped to provide a theoretical basis for utilizing OFPs to regulate plant growth and development through biotechnology tools.
