Peaceful Coexistence: The Future of China’s Relations in the South Asian Region

目前,中国与南亚地区的关系正面临困境,这缘于部分国家的政府和国内选区不赞成在其国家内推行的中国政策所致。但与国际准则相一致的中国政策表明,中国尊重各国的主权和领土完整,不干涉别国内政和地方事务。大多数观点认为,中国面临如此困境的原因是中国在某些南亚国家发挥着日益强大的作用和其采取的方式。因此,本文重点分析此困境在南亚地区之所以产生以及中国在这些国家采取的政策模式和实践行动遭致反对的原因。作为一项分析性研究,本文旨在探讨中国如何改善其与南亚地区的关系、塑造更为良好的形象以实践其“和平共处”原则。本文首先对南亚地区展开概述,然后就目前中国与南亚地区具有代表性的巴基斯坦、斯里兰卡以及东南亚国家缅甸这三个国家之间的关系进行分析,最后对中国和南亚地区关系的未来进行预测及研判。综上所述,不仅中国与南亚地区的双边关系将发生较大变化,作为资金雄厚的投资国关系格局也将改变,而且,中国在国际舞台上的作用以及其处理国际关系的方式也将发生较大变革。

China’s current relations with the countries in the South Asian region are facing a predicament as there is a possibility of some national governments and their domestic constituencies not favouring Chinese policies in their countries.However,China’s policies which are aligned with global principles,indicate that it respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries and is not favourable towards involving themselves in the domestic or local affairs of other countries.The vast majority indicate the reason for this dilemma as China’s increased role in certain South Asian countries,as well as the manner in which they are getting involved.Therefore,this research paper analyses the reasons as to why national governments and their domestic constituencies,especially in the South Asian region may have these perceptions and also what types of policies and practices China has initiated in these countries,for this opposition to occur.As an analytical research,the objectives of the study were to examine how China’s relations in the South Asian region can be improved in order to create a better image for it to practice its principle of‘peaceful coexistence’.The paper first gives an overview of South Asia,and then analyzes the current relations between China and the three representative countries in South Asia,namely Pakistan,Sri Lanka and Myanmar,and finally predicts and judges the future relations between China and South Asia.In conclusion,the paper notes that whilst China’s bilateral relations with the countries of the South Asian region will witness a substantial change,it will also change the dynamics of the relationships as a wealthy investor.Further,China’s role in the international arena and the way in which it conducts its international relations will also observe a great alteration.
