A Probe into the Designation of Tuoba Xianbei as "Suotou"

拓跋鲜卑称"索头",是自立名号,本为鲜卑语,胡三省注为"辫发"是错误的。后世研究者阐释为"编发""索发"更是错上加错。经研究,与拓跋鲜卑关系密切的乌洛侯人的先民可能来自西域,这一研究推动了拓跋鲜卑真正族源的揭秘。拓跋鲜卑出于粟特,索头即是粟特的另一种译写。

The tribe of Tuoba Xianbei,known as "Suotou",is a self-designated name in Xianbei language.It is wrong for Hu Sanxing to annotate it as "braided hair".It is even more wrong for later researchers to interpret it as "tressed hair" or "Suotou".Wu Luohou,who is closely related to Tuoba Xianbei,comes from the Western Regions and promotes the revelation of the true ethnic origin of Tuoba Xianbei.Tuoba Xianbei comes from Sogdian,and Suotou is another translation of it.
