In Victorian times, making India civilized was regarded as a great work, and in some sense, the missionary is the symbol of national and imperial identity. Women missionaries were taken as heroines and pioneers. However, Charlotte Bront?’s Jane Eyre boldly shied away from the responsibility of being an uncomplaining wife of a Christian martyrdom and dutiful missionary in India. This is a typical representation of Irish Orientalism. The author’s contradictory attitudes towards India’s suttee offers allegorical commentary on Irish affairs, having what Thomas Moore called a“doubleness of application.”Moreover, both imperial and anti - colonial impulses at the same time in Jane Eyre are characteristic of Irish strategies and narratives. Examining Bronte’s Indian writing will help us to further explore the means by which members of an internal colony might engage public debate in the metropole about political sovereignty, modern nationalism, and the imperial project.
