Anthony Caro is one of the most accomplished sculptors of the UK in the 20th century. When modernism pushed abstract painting to a peak, Caro’s sculpture also played a role in the development of new sculptures in the UK in terms of abstract form, medium and spatial relationships. Besides the combination of features of modernism theory and minimalism sculpture, Caro develops his own way of creation, one of them being the making of sculpture as a “drawing” practice. Caro’s impact on the British new sculpture generation has lasts from the 1960s to the present. This paper would select two phases of Anthony Caro’s creation to discuss how his abstract sculpture could be more and more approaching to the essence of modernist art, therefore to analyze the profound influence of Caro’s sculpture on the new British sculpture.
