From January to October in 2018, archaeologists from Xi'an Institute of Cultural Property Preservation and Archaeology and those from Cultural Heritage College of Northwest University discovered and excavated a series of tombs in Section C1 of Zone No.3 of the Happiness Forest Belt (Xingfu Lindai) construction site (in the northwest of East Xiaozhai Village, Xi'an). C1-M12 is a single-chambered earthen cave tomb with a tomb passage. Unearthed items include tomb-guarding beasts, figurines of heavenly kings, tower-shaped jars, figurines of human, camels, horses, lead implements and bronzeware, etc. The tomb structure and traits of funeral objects lead to the preliminary conclusion that the tomb was constructed when Tang Dynasty reached its zenith. Important materials for researches concerning contemporary burial rites have been collected. Because of the fact that this tomb is approximately 2.5 kilometers away from the east city wall of Chang'an, the excavation is of great significance for the study on regional tomb distribution and regularities in this area.
