Therise,development and research methods of Western historical musicology are discussed.The application of the methodology of ethnomusicology to Western historical musicology hasbroadened the perspective of Western historical musicology,as well as uniting the two disciplines.This paper traces back the historical development of Western historical musicology and ethnomusicology,and focuses on the specific application and practical significance of ethnomusicology theory in the study of Western historical musicology.It also raises several questions and thoughts about the methodology of current Western historical musicology research.
