Ocean Zones

大陆边缘,被浅海覆盖的部分叫作“大陆架”。阳光照亮了大陆架上方的海水。动物们在大陆架上厚厚的泥土.沙子和石缝中钻洞,隐藏自己。植物在这里扎下根,茁壮成长,并为其他生物提供庇护和养料。大陆遇到海洋可不会凭空消失。它会向下倾斜一点儿,并在水下持续延伸。在一些地方,大陆会延伸数百英里,然后像一个巨大的滑梯一样,急剧下降至深海底部。

The edge of a main land that lies under the shallower water is called a continental shelf.Sunshine lights up the water above the shelf. Animals dig and hide in the thick mud, sand, and stones that cover the shelf floor. Plants take root and grow, providing homes and food for many more kinds of animals.Land doesn't end when it meets the ocean. It slants downward a bit and keeps going under the water, in some places for hundreds of miles, before it plunges down sharply like a giant slide to the deep ocean floor.
