On Huang Zunxian’s View of Education for Salvation and Science Practices in His Old Age

黄遵宪是晚清著名诗人、外交家和维新思想家,较当时国内先进中国人更加理解西学传播与教育实践的内在关系,并近身到“教育救国”的文化境界,具有历史的进步性和可操作性,对近代中国的文教事业做出过积极的贡献,特别是晚年息养故里而从事地方性教育事业,适应了世界近代化思潮和文教实践的召唤,彰显了经世致用、启蒙个性、包容开放和救国救民的历史特点。黄遵宪晚年投身教育救国的文教事业,凸显出他近代教育家的历史地位。

Huang Zunxian was a renowned poet, diplomat and ideologist of restoration in Late Qing Dynasty, who was more concerned with the internal relation between the spreading of western learning and education practices than other domestic Chinese enlightened scholars. He made the recognition to the cultural importance of “education for salvation”, which was historically advanced and pragmatic, bringing positive contributions to the development of culture and education for modern China. During his old age, his experiences of attending local education practices was particularly meaningful, which catered to the modernization tendency worldwide and the request of practicing culture and education, manifesting the historical characters of pragmatism, enlightenment for personality, openness, inclusiveness and national salvation. In his old age, Huang Zunxian devoted himself to the culture and education for national salvation which illustrated his historical status to be a modern educationist.
