A Study on Mou Yingzhen’s Shiwen

牟应震《诗问》是一部极具特色的《诗经》学著作,其治《诗》不恪守汉宋门户,而是实事求是,成一家之言。在解《诗》方面,牟氏敢于提出新说,善于发现问题,注重分析诗篇的比兴手法,常别出心裁。用以《诗》解《诗》、贯通群经的解读方法,是其过人之处。其不足之处亦在于标新立异,且小学功底不足,滥用假借,以致许多解释难以使人信服。《诗问》是一部善于发现问题的著作,也是充满问题的著作。

Shiwen is a distinctive academic book about The Book of Songs, which is written by Mou Yingzhen. The book does not abide by the Han Dynasty’s and Song Dynasty’s learning. It seeks truth from facts and creates a philosophy of its own. In the interpretation of the The Book of Songs, Mou Yingzhen is good at discovering problems and he comes up with new ideas. He pays attention to the analysis of metaphor in the book, which is different from the other works. Shiwen also uses the methods of interpreting poems by poems and interpreting poems by using all Chinese classics, which are its extraordinary places. However, its inadequacies lie in its unconventional preferences, lack of basic skills about traditional linguistics and the abuse of phonetic loan (jiajie). As a result, many explanations are hard to convince the readers. Shiwen is a book which is good at discovering problems and is also a book full of questions.
