Objective To analyze the differences of gut microbiota-host co-metabolites between patients with acne vulgaris and healthy controls, which could help the study of gut microbiota involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Methods Fecal samples from 43 untreated acne patients and 43 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were collected. The disease duration, height, weight, and sleep quality of the participants were recorded. The 118 metabolites were detected using Agilent model 7890B gas chromatograph. Then the non-parametric tests were conducted to find the differences of gut metabolites between acne patients and healthy controls. Results Significant difference was found in the composition of metabolites between patients with acne vulgaris and healthy controls. There was no correlation of the metabolites with disease severity of the acne patients.Twenty-four different gut microbiota-host metabolites between patients and control group were found to be significantly different with non-parametric analysis(P<0.05).Compared with healthy controls, sleep quality was worse in patients with acne vulgaris(P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that the gut metabolites were negatively correlated with sleep quality. Conclusion Gut microbiota-host metabolites are significantly different between patients with acne vulgaris and healthy controls, which may be a link to explain the involvement of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris.
