翟理斯,英国著名汉学家、翻译家,1867年开始在中国任外交官职,期间著述颇丰;1897年成为剑桥大学第二任中文教授,并继续从事汉学研究直至病逝,对清末时期的汉文明西化起到了重要作用。拟从翟理斯个人鲜明的性格出发,深入挖掘其个性的缘起,并分析指出:正是其与众不同的独特个性造就了他斐然的汉学成就,也正是其纯粹的治学精神成就了他在汉文化传播史上的重要地位。

Known as a famous British Sinologist and translator,Herbert Allen Giles worked as a diplomat in China since 1867,and wrote a lot during his tenure.Afterwards,he became the second Chinese professor at Cambridge University and continued to study Sinology until his death.He played an important role in the Westernization of Chinese civilization in the late Qing Dynasty.Starting from his distinctive personality,this paper deeply explores the origin of his personality,and points out that it is his unique personality that has created his outstanding achievements in Sinology,and also it is his pure academic spirit that has contributed to his great influence in Chinese civilization spreading history.
