The relationship between early Hollywood movies and the film audience in Shanghai is characterized by complexity and diversity in film criticism. From the perspective of cultural consumption, the "Shanghai complex" of early Hollywood films fostered unique aesthetics and temperament of the Shanghai audience. In the first half of the 20th century, the Shanghai audience wavered between ideological beliefs and personal needs while never giving up a pursuit of "modernity", reflecting their cosmopolitan yet local mentality. This phenomenon not only demonstrated the connotation of modernity, but also helped cultivating the culture of the city.
