Chinese glass paintings were popular in the Western market in the Ming and Qing dynasties. This fact challenges the theory that a Western influence dominated the late imperial Chinese art and reveals an influence of Chinese art on Western paintings. Chinese glass paintings in the Ming and Qing dynasties fused the idea and technique of Chinese and Western art, added Chinese elements, and became popular in the West when chinoiserie gained popularity. Hence it is time to reevaluate the influence of Chinese glass paintings on the cross-cultural communication between the Chinese and the Western art.
