王韬涉海小说中的海洋书写分作整体性海洋叙事与点缀性海洋元素。《仙人岛》等受报刊连载的创作方式影响,叙事中融合"误入异域"与"才子佳人"两种模式。《因循岛》等通过意象化的海洋环境在海洋叙事中植入个人情感。《海外美人》继承前代"航海远行"叙事模式,表现对近代中国新型海洋环境的认知。受困于晚清社会淡薄的海洋意识与匮乏的海洋实践,王韬涉海小说虽完成局部新变,却始终无法从思想精神层面实现对于海洋的真正认知。
