Re-understanding the Enlightenment Values of the Individual Liberation of the May 4th New Literature

五四以来的新文学,以"自由"作为思想启蒙的重要口号,以"个性解放"作为终极目的,对中国传统文化的伦理道德体系,发起了全面而猛烈的攻击。然而,"自由"在其具体的社会实践中具有"双刃剑"效应,一方面,它打破了中国人的精神枷锁,加速了中国社会现代化的历史进程;另一方面,它又严重地动摇了中国传统文化的牢固基础,使个人主义思潮在现实生活当中任意泛滥。重新梳理新文学所走过的复杂历程,对于我们正确认知新文学的现代性追求,有着至关重要的理论意义。

The new literature since ″May Fourth Movement″,with ″freedom″ as an important slogan of ideological enlightenment and ″individual liberation″ as the ultimate goal, has launched a comprehensive and fierce attack on the ethical and moral system of Chinese traditional culture. However, in its concrete social practice, freedom is obviously a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it broke the spiritual shackles of the Chinese people and accelerated the historical process of China′s social modernization. On the other hand, it has seriously shaken the solid foundation of Chinese traditional culture and made the trend of individualism run rampant in real life. Therefore, it is of great theoretical significance for us to correctly understand the modern pursuit of new literature by reviewing the complicated course of the new literature.
