Text and Politics: Research on the Publishing and Distribution of Jinghua Daily

光绪二十四年(1898)近代江西第一份报纸即《菁华报》在萍乡创刊,成为江西近代报业的发端。该报的创刊,既与戊戌维新期间的办报高潮有直接联系,更与萍乡境内煤矿和铁路建设中,舆论引导的现实需要和地方政府务实的工作作风有关。通过对该报出版和发行的分析,发现阅读的受众集中在科举士子,该报初步具备市场化和商业化运营的特点。以《劝学篇》的刊发为例,表明该报并非完全鼓吹维新,地方官的政治动机同样不应忽视。

In the twenty-fourth year of Guangxu(1898), the first newspaper in Jiangxi, Jinghua Daily, was published in Pingxiang and became the origin of the modern newspaper industry in Jiangxi. The publication of the newspaper was not only directly related to the climax of founding newspapers during the Reform Movement of 1898, but also related to the reality of public opinion guidance and the pragmatic work style of the local governments when the coal mines and railways were under construction in Pingxiang. From the analysis of the publication and distribution of the newspaper, it shows that most of the readers were the scholars of the Imperial Examinations and the newspaper was characterized initially with marketing and commercial operation. In the paper, an article titled Encouraging Learning issued in Jinghua Daily is taken as an example to prove that the newspaper did not completely advocate reform, instead, the political motive of local officials were not ignored.
