Coming-of-age remains an important motif in Chinese American literature, with philosophic explanation of“subjectivity”,psychological analysis of“self”and cultural construction of identity in social and historical context for realization of subjectification of“the other”and centralization of marginality.Bone tells a growing-up story in the context of the traumas of three generations of Chinese American family in San Francisco’s China Town. The novel features the narrative development through space displacement with embodiment of the core image“bone”rather than the linear narrative of growing-up mode in traditional novels.Bone finally adopts the post-colonial resistance strategy to choose marginality as a space of radical openness against oppression to portray Chinese Americans’real-and-imagined growing-up journeys in the context of racism, orientalism and globalization.
