This thesis analyzes the group image of Japanese-Americans in The Buddha in the Attic under the perspectives of archetype criticism and the scapegoat theory of Rene Girard, and proves that the Japanese immigrants in the time of World War II depicted by Otsuka own an innocent and ignorant art image as a scapegoat who have intrinsic qualities such as the intruders, the purifier and the sacrifice.Through studying the description of a unique ethnic group as a scapegoat, the conclusion can be drawn that Julie Otsuka makes an effort to voice for silent people in her ethnic group and tries to improve the image of them. This also indicates author′s calling for human reflection on war and ethnic issues.
