This study examines the current state of native language thinking in college students' second language writing. The study found that: 1. in the process of discourse writing, regardless of the level of the second language, almost half of the thinking activities rely on the mother tongue thinking;2. the difference in the second language level does not lead to significant changes in the total amount of the native language thinking;3. The level of the second language leads to significant differences in the type of native language thinking. This result has a certain meaning for a comprehensive understanding of the role of the mother tongue in second language acquisition.
