Samuel P.Hays is a famous contemporary American historian who specializes in new political history and environmental political history.From the 1950s to the 1970s,Hays was one of the scholars who established the paradigm of “new political history”.He expanded the scope and vision of the studies of political history by placing politics within social context in light of structural analysis.In late 1970s,he turned to environmental political history,to establish a new field for the political studies of environmental history.As one of the founding fathers of both new political history and environmental political history,the trajectory of Hays' scholarly development also embodies the transformation of American political historiography.
