《秦梦记》主要是描述梦境中的"我"因没有遭逢明君圣主而郁郁不得志的经历,写的是秦国梦,也是秦地梦,是秦国梦与秦地梦的叠加,是梦幻与现实的相互映照,是作者为官长安终被无辜放逐的人生噩梦的曲折表现。主题是通过对梦中君主的不满发泄对现实皇帝的不满,藉梦中怨愤以摅写现实怨愤。

A Dream of Qin mainly narrates the first person speaker's experience in a dream where he suffers a sense of injured merit in his encounter with an unwise lord. The dream is a dream of both the Qin Empire and the Qin land, and the story is both a dream and a reflection of the author' s nightmare experience of groundless banishment from Chang'an. The theme of the story is the author's dissatisfaction with his lord delivered through the narrator's dissatisfaction with the lord, and his grievances in real life expressed in the form of a dream.
