Since ancient Greece, implication of the aphorism "know thyself" has been throughout the development of Western thoughts. How to know oneself becomes an essential question in the process of exploring being. Contemporary Australian writer Gerald Murnane, from a perspective of vision, provides an answer to this question. His work The Plains, via depicting conflicts within the plainsmen and the protagonist’s deconstruction of the dichotomies on plains, reveals the complexity of vision and the connection between vision and being. The Plains presents the readers a perceptual thought thread which has long been obscured by the rational, reveals vision’s function in knowing oneself and, enriches angles in thinking of being.
