Identity between Two Selves: A Study on “Camouflage” in Steer Toward Rock and The Human Stain

在美国少数族裔文学中,身份问题一直是个反复出现的主题。《人性的污秽》中的主人公科尔曼就是伪装失败的典型,自始至终他都不敢坦白,一直活在虚假的牢笼里,受尽折磨。而《望岩》中的杰克选择用假名字来真实地生活,从而实现了一种“真我”和“假我”的结合,完成了自我建构。“真我”通过伪装转化成“假我”,二者不应该是完全割裂的。只有在二者之间找到一个契合点,才能打破真与假之间的壁垒,构建一个更加完善的自我。

The identity issue has always been a recurring theme in the American minority literature.Coleman,the protagonist in The Human Stain,is a typical example of camouflage failure.From the beginning to end,he dares not confess.He has been living in a false cage and suffering.In Steer Toward Rock,Jack chooses to live in a real life under a false name,thus realizing a combination of"true self"and"false self"and completing self-construction.The true self is transformed into the false self through the disguising,and the two should not be completely separated.Only by finding a joint point between them can the barrier be broken between the truth and falsehood to build a more perfect self.
