Ground has always played a key role in the practice of OPEN Architecture. Its recently-completed project Tank Shanghai Art Center proposes a Z-shaped super-surface to connect five individual oil tanks which previously served Shanghai Longhua Airport. As such, the project creates an open urban park in addition to the required art center.By tracing the six-year design process, the essay attempts to discuss the project through two threads:theoretical discourses on the urban ground as well as the role of ground in OPEN Architecture’s practice. While the project marks the office’s long-term pursuit of urban publicness and spatial openness,it also poses new challenges in how to better maintain the high quality of public space.
