“French Lieutenant’s Woman”,having been nominated the Nobel Prize for literature,is John Fowles’ masterpiece. Being taken as one of the best novels in the 20th century,it is on the mast-read book lists in Europe and America. It has been widely discussed for its multiple endings and writing skills. The pursuit of freedom is one of the most reflection worthy aspects. The heroine,as a mysterious and lonely individual,though suffered from her behavior of pursuing freedom,insisted on her own understanding of happiness. In this paper,Sara’s loneliness,freedom,and happiness are analyzed to explore the idea of freedom in this novel.
