A Critical Discourse Analysis of Reports from the U.S. Mainstream Media on the Political Report at the 19th NCCPC

本文采用Fairclough的三维分析框架,分析了来自《纽约时报》和《华盛顿邮报》的九篇文章。研究发现,美媒对中国共产党执政与改革思路进行了一定深度的解读,其基调趋于理性客观。美媒这一转变的原因可能在于中国国力日新月异和西方民主陷入困境,从而促使许多西方有志之士进行反省。同时也应注意到,美媒在诸多方面难以摆脱固有思维,彻底消除偏见尚需时日。

This paper intends to explore the U.S. mainstream media’s interpretations of and attitudes to the Political Report at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(NCCPC). It examines 9 reports taken from The New York Times and The Washington Post through Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Framework. The research results indicate that the relative in-depth reports from the U.S. mainstream media demonstrate a more objective tone of the governance and reform vision of the Communist Party of China. It can be assumed that the attitude adjustment is the result of reflections by numerous reasonable westerners when witnessing the rapidly growing national strength of China and the relative decline of the Western democracy. At the same time, awareness has to be raised that it still takes a long journey to completely eradicate biases with the long-existing stereotypes the U.S. mainstream media harbors towards China.
