Since the reform and opening up,the contemporary Japanese, who come to Shanghai because of new job opportunities or lifestyles, are a"marginal"group mixed between China and Japan. Their group consciousness, social identity and national identity are constructed in the complex tension of economy, trade, politics and culture between the two countries. Especially when major events occur between the two countries, they can often arouse their own social identity. More importantly, they are usually able to treat these dilemmas relatively objectively, not only considering their own situation, but also expressing understanding and sympathy for groups in the same situation. The contemporary Japanese community in Shanghai can be said to have the possibility of developing into a"mixed group"based on a thorough understanding of the social culture of the two countries and integrating the social culture of the two countries. In this sense, they can serve as an important window to understand the history of civil exchanges between China and Japan.
