English Translations of Wen Xin Diao Long in China: A Revisit

国内《文心雕龙》英译研究目前呈现多层面、系统性、理论化趋势,主要包括译文评析和翻译策略、文论术语翻译、译者主体性以及文论思想的域外传播和接受研究等四个方面。研究重心不再囿于传统翻译视角,中国古代文论思想的域外体系构建已进入研究视域,体现了近年来《文心雕龙》研究与国家文化战略的契合。但仍存在一些问题:译本研究分布不均衡;新技术翻译实证研究路径不够宽;多译本比较研究常见,而单译本系统研究不足。这反映出英译贫乏对英译研究的制约及海外研究对国内研究的影响。未来《文心雕龙》英译研究应走出现代与传统的二元对立,关注翻译的时代性和海外读者的期待变化,在文化战略大背景和中华学术外译项目的推进下,为中国古典文论在世界文论系统中的合理构建寻找现代启示。

Studies on the English translations of Wen Xin Diao Long in China have been diversified, systematic and theoretical, mainly focusing on the following four aspects, namely text evaluation and strategies, term translation of literary theory, translators’ subjectivity and the overseas transmission and acceptance of its literary theorizing. The focus of English translations of Wen Xin Diao Long has been extended to the overseas systematizing of its literary theory from the traditional translation studies, exhibiting the recent integration of translation studies and national cultural strategy. The existent problems are the uneven distribution of its renditions, lack of enough corpus-based translation approaches, more contrast analysis among renditions than systematic probe into one rendition. These imperfections arise from poverty of more renditions and its unfavorable impact on their studies and suggestive role played by the overseas research in the domestic one. Future undertaking is supposed to go beyond the dual opposition between the modern and the traditional, highlight the changes of the times and the expectations of overseas readers as well, and seek modern inspiration in proper construction of Chinese classical literary theory in the world literary theory system in the context of national cultural strategy and grants of Chinese academic translation project.
