Ferguson and His Study of Ancient Chinese Painting

In the first half of the 20th century, a batch of sinologists who studied Chinese painting came to the fore in the West and they spread Chinese paintings in the West by publishing related writings and curating exhibitions and other means, among which John.C Ferguson (1866-1945) was one of the representative figures. Ferguson had rich experiences and a large circle of friends in China, and he began to collect Chinese artworks in the process of constantly cognizing Chinese art. In the study of ancient Chinese painting, Ferguson gradually developed his own methodology and theory. Ferguson interpreted the core concepts in Chinese painting like literati painting with Sinological methods and analyzed the techniques and artistic spirit of Chinese painting. Moreover, Ferguson acknowledged the nationality, independence and inclusive value of ancient Chinese painting in a comparison between Chinese and Western painting. Fergusons writings about the history of Chinese painting laid a foundation for later Western studies of the history of Chinese painting and presented Chinese aesthetic observations in the M Western view" to the world.
