By virtue of the historical novel The Secret River, the Australian novelist Grenville demonstrates her view of racial reconciliation. She intends that racial reconciliation should be advanced by constructing a harmonious community through the recognition of the two sides’ similarities and the tolerance of their differences in the premise of the whites’ recognition and assumption of the responsibility of colonial massacres committed by their ancestors. The novel reflects the public intellectual awareness of the author participating in social issues, and provides a new option for racial reconciliation through her own literary creation.
