The Characterization of Wo(men)——A Comparative Study on Emotion Repression of Pu and Poe

蒲松龄的志怪小说和爱伦坡的哥特小说中,男性都将女性固化成某种合适的形象,她们要么是温柔的贤妻良母,要么是可怕的女鬼,但在塑造女性的过程中,男性自身受到压制的情感也逐渐显露。同样地,作家蒲松龄和爱伦坡的创作意图也隐藏在非人类女性和复杂的男性形象塑造中。蒲、坡作品中的层级形象塑造过程揭露了特定社会意识形态下的一系列情感压迫,这种压迫首先影响了现实世界中的两位作家,其次反蚀了故事中的男性,并被男性转移到女性身上,以此形成对个人情感压迫的整体性认识。

In the fictional constructions of Pu Songling and Edgar Allan Poe, men have respectively characterized women as an amiable mother and an insidious ghost so that to fixate them as an appropriate type, but secretly hidden in the construction of "women" images is a portrayal of "men's" mentality whose emotions are hidden in one way or another. Similarly, the authorial intention of Pu and Poe is embedded into the characterization of unhuman females and complex males. The plague of emotional repression from social ideology firstly effects on Pu and Poe greatly, and then defeats men in fictions, who, however, transfer it to fictional women. By unveiling such layering of characterizations, a holistic view is formed on the impediment of seeking for the real sentiment of individuals.
