The Initiation and Development of Searching for Hermits to No Avail Poems in the Tang Dynasty

唐代寻隐不遇诗反映出唐代士人的精神风貌和社会文化特征,形成唐代文学史的独特文化景观。终唐一代,寻隐不遇诗创作蔚然成风。这一题材的形成源于西晋以来的寻隐诗,但在唐代时代文化的孕育下,寻隐诗凸显不遇主题,并在继承前代对山水的书写中彰显出新变,即寻隐对象的多元混同、由寻隐而悟道的内在结构、寻隐处所的郊野山林化、以虚衬实的侧面烘托。

The searching for hermits to no avail in the Tang Dynasty reflects the spiritual features and social and cultural characteristics of the scholars in the Tang Dynasty and forms a unique cultural landscape in the history of literature in the Tang Dynasty. In the end of the Tang Dynasty, the creation of such poetry was a common practice. The formation of this theme originated from the search for hidden hermits since the Western Jin Dynasty. However, under the gestation of the Tang Dynasty culture, the Tang Dynasty’s composition of such poems highlighted the theme. Meanwhile in the inheritance of the previous generations, there were new features added to it, namely the multiple kinds of hidden objects, the inner structure of the hidden and enlightened, the countryside of the hidden space, and the side of the virtual reality.
